SUMMER HOME... This
was an excellent summer of 2006 on Cape Cod. I was there by
myself most of the summer except for a couple of days in early
July when my youngest son, Zachary, came out to visit me. I
ate plenty of blue fish and exercised each day. I was able to
read some excellent books, including the life of Benedict Arnold, 1776
and some light books by Mike Wallace and Garrison
Keillor. The summer was very long and the time went fast. I
did have a water leak and my hot water heater finally gave out at the
end of the season. The toilet has a mystery leak which happens
now and then. These are problems to be fixed in 2007. I
grew some nice yellow marigolds and planted 2 shrubs in front to the
trailer.I was able to attend a talk at the Wellfleet Library by Ruel Wilson, the son of Edmund Wilson and Mary McCarthy. He spoke about growing up in Wellfleet in the 1940s. It took 7 years, but I finally was able to attend a great lecture. I also went up to Truro to see David Korn speak about his new book "Hubris". The lecture was pretty basic, I guess I am a political junkie so I knew most of everything he talked about. I did tell him and the crowd that I could not stand Fox News; he is a talking head on Fox. I have seen him on TV since then and he is an excellent writer. THE BIKE....... This
was the summer of the green bike. The first thing I did when I
got to the Cape was purchase a nice "comfort" bike. I
went on every part of the Cape Cod Rail Trail with it; I surprised
myself how well I could ride this thing, it has been many years since I
actually used a bike (just about 40 years). The trail is over 30
miles long and the State has been fixing it up for past several years.
My place is right on the trail and I rode everyday. My
favorite ride is about 6 miles round trip to the Marconi
Station. You get to see the ocean, go past a strange water tower
and there is also a nice deck up high where you can see down the Cape
and over to the Bay. This is the narrowest place on the
Cape. Just about a mile between the Ocean and the Bay.
Riding the bike was great exercise and I also met people along
the way. I enjoyed seeing families with their kids out on the
trail. Some people even carry their dogs in baskets or bike
trailers.![]() I eventually got a nice big basket for the bike. I also got a water holder, a computer to tell me how far I rode and a little compartment under the seat. I felt like the bike was getting like Pee Wee Herman's bike. I just need some streamers and a pointed helmet. Last year I could only ride a bike up to the first road crossing; just about a half mile away. After a half year of exercising and diet, I am now able to ride the bike long distances. BTW... my family is under orders to shoot me if I ever start wearing those bike clothes with all the advertising; there are plenty of people wearing these European bike costumes. There is a problem with the riders who must go fast ( I am more of a meanderer on the trail). Most people give you a warning that they are passing you; some do not and I had a couple of close calls. The trail was only crowded on a few weekends in the middle of the season. One nice thing about riding my bike, I always had my IPOD with me. I could listen to music or podshows. Plenty of politics and people talking on my IPOD. I tried the trail up in Provincetown. I was not impressed with it. It went up and down the dunes and out to the airport. There were puddles at the bottom of the trails. Here is a picture of my bike at Herring Cove. This
is an excellent place to watch the sun go down over the USA. This is a
place to see the whale watching boats go bye. A few years back
you could see plenty of whales just off this beach. The waves are
never high here, but this is the place to go to see some great sites. Several years back I saw a lady drive up with a pickup truck. She let out about 10 ducks who followed her down to the beach and swam in the water. She eventually let them back to her truck after their swim...... here is a link to a time lapse sunset video at Herring Cove... and another one here:
TRIP TO NANTUCKET....

LIFE ON CAPE COD.....
I
got this cover for the car to keep pollen and sand and bird..... off
the car.
I was able to park it for days at a time. I eventually starting getting my groceries with my bike. |
